The team at KJL recently had a large renovation project on our hands. Our client came to us after they suffered a large house fire, resulting in a total loss of property. They decided rather than rebuild, they would downsize (considerably) to a 1,000 square foot condo in Eugene. The condo was in its original condition (circa the 1970’s), and was in need of a major renovation. Our team is always up for a challenge, so we were excited to tackle this complete condo remodel.

We determined that the condo needed to be more open to make it feel larger and let in more light. To accomplish this, we completely gutted unnecessary walls to create a “great room” feeling.

A Spacious and Modern New Kitchen

kitchen renovation

In the kitchen, we added a new, large island with a breakfast bar. We also updated all of the finishes, including efficient built-ins and other cabinetry. We also turned the cluttered built-in kitchen desk into a beautiful bar area.

An Updated Fireplace and Family Room

fireplace renovation

Since the kitchen was now open to the family room, this large space was now the gathering area for folks. We decided that the focal point of the area was now the fireplace, which also needed to be updated. We completely re-faced the fireplace to make it stand out.

Off of the family room, we also added a set of stairs and a 135 square foot loft above the former wasted attic space to further open things up. This also allowed for a sunny niche the clients could use as a retreat or even a space for out of town guests (we added a sleeper sofa).

A Bathroom/Laundry Room Combination

bathroom remodel

We created a new space in the guest bathroom for a laundry room (co-opting an adjoining closet space), where we snuggled a stacking washer and dryer. This allowed the entire existing laundry area to become part of the now-spacious open kitchen.

The home is now perfect for entertaining and definitely does not feel as small as its actual square footage would indicate. Even though this condo remodel was a lot of work, we can rest easy knowing that these empty nesters now have a lovely and very livable home.
